Hon. Consul General of Nepal to Victoria, Chandra Yonzon, Chairman of the Council of Ministers (de facto Prime Minister of Nepal 2013-2014) former Chief Justice of Nepal, Khil Raj Regmi, and members of the community met with Legislative Council President, Hon. Bruce Atkinson, at Victoria Parliament House on Thursday, 22 February 2018.

The productive meeting saw discussion concerning Nepal’s recent elections, establishment of a stable and federal government which recognises the democratic values and norms, as well as the state of the country and its rebuild following the 2015 earthquake.

Consul General Yonzon discsussed the agenda for a bipartisan diplomatic visit to Nepal with Hon. Atkinson. It was discussed that following the establishment of a stable government, the Nepalese Government will now be considering high level diplomatic visits between both countries in order for diplomatic representatives to meet and discuss the further enhancement of relations and development of Australia-Nepal relations in trade, investment, agriculture, education, tourism and many other areas.

Consul General Yonzon, together with Chairman Regmi, extended a formal invitation to the Victorian Government and their representatives, to pay an official visit to Nepal in 2018 before the Victorian election which is set to take place in November.

Hon. Atkinson delightfully accepted the offer and is looking forward to mentioning this proposal to his team, saying that after discussion with both parties members, the decision will be officially declared, which he anticipates will be soon.

Following the meeting in Victorian Parliament, Chairman Regmi and his wife, Shanta Regmi, were also welcomed to the Consulate Office.

In respect of the welcoming tradition, Consul General Yonzon welcomed them with the khada and formal gift. The community members were also formally welcomed to the ceremony and had an interaction session with Chairman Regmi, where he discussed his tenure and thoughts about the current judiciary level of Nepal and its political condition.

The Nepal Consulate Office expressed its appreciation for the productive interactive session and thanked Mr and Mrs Regmi, Hon. Atkinson and community members for their time and presence on the day.
