Dashain Celebrations Unite Melbourne’s Nepalese

Hon. Consul General of Nepal to Victoria, Chandra Yonzon, and his wife, Laxmi Yonzon, attended Dashain and Tihar Subhakaman Sanjh 2017 celebrations hosted by Nepalese Association of Victoria (NAV) in Brunswick, Melbourne, on Saturday, 7 October 2017. The program, which sought to bring together Melbourne’s diverse Nepalese community, saw more than 250 participants fill the venue to capacity.


Community leaders and members from over 18 Nepalese community organisations and students from as many institutes and universities came together to participate in the program. Also in attendance were Mr South Asia Australia, Mrs South Asia Australia, members of Victoria Police and Praveen Kumar, representing Peter Khalil, MP for Wills.

Consul General Yonzon participated in ceremonies alongside NAV President Dr Anupam Pokharel, Non-Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA) SCC Secretary, Gautam Laamichhane, and Former VMC Chairperson, Chin Tan, lighting the diyo in front Durga Maataa by Panchakanya.

Group and solo performers from Geelong Nepalese Association, Magar Samaj, Didi Bahini Samaj, Craigieburn Nepalese Community, Himalayan Nepalese Society and NAV constituted highlights of the evening. Consul General Yonzon thanks all performers, community members and volunteers who helped to organise such a wonderful event. Special thanks are expressed to NAV President, Dr Anupam Pokharel, whose inclusion of Nepalese community members of all walks of live, as well as engagement of the youth and students is especially commendable.
