The meeting was held to discuss a proposal to establish a Sister City relationship between the City of Greater Bendigo and a yet-to-be-named city in Nepal. Preliminary discussions were centred on Bendigo’s relationship with Nepal to-date, as well as expectations and possible opportunities in formalising the relationship.

Mayor O’Rourke said that a Sister City relationship between Bendigo and Nepal could see focus on areas such as business, education, and cultural linkages. She said that a plan to hold a community consultation which would see community members already actively engaged in the existing Bendigo-Nepal relationship given the opportunity to provide their feedback and input to the proposal.

Consul General Chandra Yonzon (चन्द्रयोन्जन) proposed to have another formal meeting together with her Ambassador of Nepal to Australia, Her Excellency Lucky Sherpa in October to discuss the proposal further. Both parties agreed to proceed further, with a consultation, meetings and formal proposal in the future. He said that formalising the existing relationship between Bendigo and Nepal would allow Bendigo’s Nepalese and wider local Australian community to build upon and strengthen the already strong bilateral relationship between Bendigo and Nepal. He said that, “Together, we will be able to facilitate what is already a community-driven, action-orientated bilateral relationship.”

Following productive discussions, Consul General Chandra Yonzon (चन्द्रयोन्जन) presented Mayor Councillor O’Rourke and Cr Williams with traditional khada shawls and a statue of Lord Buddha as a token of appreciation.

The meeting comes following a community presentation of the Bendigo-Nepal freidnship to Ambassador of Nepal to Australia, HE Sherpa and Nepalese delegation at Welcome Session for the Nepalese Ambassador to Bendigo in July 2017.
